About Anas eatoni (Sharpe, 1875)
The Eaton's pintail, scientifically named Anas eatoni (Sharpe, 1875), is a small duck. Adults measure 35-45 cm in length, with a wingspan of 65-70 cm. Males weigh 430-502 g, while females weigh 400-500 g. Adult males and females have similar overall brownish plumage with cinnamon underparts. The two sexes can be distinguished by two features: the speculum is green in males and brown in females, and males have longer central rectrices. Juveniles have plumage similar to adults, but are more streaked on their underparts. Eaton's pintail is found only on the Kerguelen and Crozet Islands, though it has been recorded as a vagrant on the nearby Prince Edward Islands. In summer, it lives on small lakes, pools, marshes, and other freshwater wetlands. When most freshwater bodies freeze over in winter, it migrates to coastal bays.
