About Anaea troglodyta (Fabricius, 1775)
Anaea troglodyta (Fabricius, 1775), commonly called the Florida leafwing, Portia, or Florida goatweed butterfly, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. Its distribution covers southern Florida and many islands in the Caribbean. It has different regional common names: it is called the Jamaican tropical leafwing in Jamaica, and the Cuban red leaf in the Cayman Islands and Cuba. The wingspan of this butterfly ranges from 76 to 90 millimetres, which equals 3.0 to 3.5 inches. Dry-season form adults are active on the wing from October to April, while wet-season form adults are on wing from May to October. Larvae of this species feed on Croton cascarilla and Croton linearis. Adult butterflies feed on rotting fruit, dung, and various fluids. While over 230 species have previously been placed within the genus Anaea, Gerardo Lamas in 2004 classified all Anaea populations as a single species: Anaea troglodyta (Fabricius 1775).
