About Amphispizopsis quinquestriata (P.L.Sclater & Salvin, 1868)
The five-striped sparrow, with the scientific name Amphispizopsis quinquestriata, is a medium-sized sparrow. It is the only species that belongs to the genus Amphispizopsis. It was formerly classified in the genus Amphispiza alongside the black-throated sparrow, Amphispiza bilineata. This passerine bird lives primarily along the eastern Gulf of California region and Pacific coastal region of mainland western Mexico. Its breeding range extends north into the southern tip of the U.S. state of Arizona, and into the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range that holds the Madrean sky islands of southeastern Arizona, extreme southwestern New Mexico, and northern Sonora. The species was first recorded breeding in the United States during the 1950s, and it is still a rare breeding bird there. This species is a regular host for nest parasitism by cowbirds. The five-striped sparrow prefers steep, brushy hillsides in canyon areas.
