About Amelanchier nantucketensis E.P.Bicknell
Amelanchier nantucketensis, commonly called Nantucket serviceberry or Nantucket shadbush, produces edible fruits called pomes. This species is of conservation concern in its wild range. Its natural distribution runs from Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard to Long Island and Staten Island, with scattered populations also found in Maryland, Virginia, Maine, and Nova Scotia. It is common on Nantucket. This low-growing shrub reaches 0.6 to 1.5 meters (2 to 5 feet) in height, and forms colonies by spreading via stolons. It bears cream-colored flowers and blue fruits, and grows in dry, sandy, sunny habitats including pine barrens and grasslands.
