About Amegilla calceifera (Cockerell, 1911)

Amegilla calceifera is a species of anthophorine bee belonging to the family Apidae. This species occurs in southern and temperate Asia. Adult Amegilla calceifera act as pollinators for flowers of Alpinia nieuwenhuizii. The species is known for its rapid, agile flight, which lets it hover near flowers while it forages for nectar and pollen. Unlike social honey bees, Amegilla calceifera is generally solitary; females typically build their nests underground. Females construct cells for their offspring, and fill these cells with pollen and nectar as food provisions. A study from West Bengal, India recorded this bee's activity across a range of crop environments, and noted the species' importance to agriculture.
