Amaranthus australis (A.Gray) J.D.Sauer is commonly called southern amaranth or southern water-hemp. This plant is recorded both as a herbaceous annual and a short-lived herbaceous perennial. It typically reaches 1 to 3 meters (3.3 to 9.8 feet) in height. Reported maximum heights for the species vary, with records of specimens reaching 4.6 meters (15 feet) tall and other records of individuals growing as tall as 9 meters (30 feet). Its stems can grow up to 30 centimeters in diameter. It occurs across many southern states of the United States, Mexico, the West Indies, and South America, and is frequently found growing in wetland areas.
