About Amara aenea (DeGeer, 1774)

Amara aenea (DeGeer, 1774), commonly known as the common sun beetle, is a species of ground beetle. It is widespread across nearly all of Europe and Northern Asia, and its range also extends into parts of Northern Africa. Adult A. aenea are predatory, feeding on other insects that are classified as agricultural pests, including the apple maggot and soybean aphid. Because of this predatory behavior on pest species, the beetle is currently being studied for potential use in integrated pest management. Adult beetles also feed on the developing seeds of Poa trivialis and smooth meadow grass (Poa pratensis). Larvae of Amara aenea are omnivorous.
