About Alsophis rufiventris (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854)
The red-bellied racer, scientific name Alsophis rufiventris (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854), is a medium-sized snake. Its maximum recorded snout-vent length is 92 cm (36 in), though individuals may reach up to 150 cm (59 in). The dorsal background color ranges through various shades from gray to brown. Dark brown stripes run from the snout, through the eyes, and onto the anteriormost portion of the back. Males have a dorsal pattern of diffuse, black-bordered brown blotches along the midback, which fade into an indistinct wide dark middorsal stripe toward the tail. Females have a pattern of streaks and smudges that grow less distinct toward the tail. The underside is yellowish, and gradually darkens to dark brown or black toward the tail. This species occurs on the Lesser Antilles islands of Saba and Sint Eustatius. It has been completely extirpated from St Kitts and Nevis, and occupies a broad range of terrestrial habitats.
