About Aloeides thyra

Aloeides thyra, commonly known as the red copper, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Lycaenidae. This species is found in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Males have a wingspan ranging from 22 to 26 mm, while females have a slightly larger wingspan of 24 to 28 mm. Adult Aloeides thyra are active from July to April, with activity peaks occurring in October and February. The species produces multiple generations each year during the warmer months. The larvae feed on three plant species in the Aspalathus genus: Aspalathus acuminata, Aspalathus laricifolia and Aspalathus cymbiformis. The larvae are attended by ants of the species Lepisiota capensis.
