About Allotria elonympha Hübner, 1818

Allotria is a monotypic moth genus (meaning it contains only one species) that belongs to the family Erebidae. Its single species is Allotria elonympha, which is commonly known as the false underwing moth. This species occurs in eastern North America. Both the genus and the species were first described by Jacob Hübner: Hübner described the species in 1818, and described the genus in 1823. The wingspan of adult Allotria elonympha ranges from 33 to 44 mm. Adult moths can be seen in flight from March through September each year. The larvae of this species feed on a variety of deciduous trees, including black gum (Nyssa sylvatica), hickory, and walnut.
