About Allium subvillosum Salzm. ex Schult. & Schult.f.
Allium subvillosum, commonly known as spring garlic, is a species of wild onion found across Europe and North Africa. It is native to southern Iberia, the Balearic Islands, Sicily, and northern Africa (Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco). It is also present in the Azores, where it may be an introduced species.
Allium subvillosum is a bulb-forming perennial herb that grows up to 30 cm tall. It produces long, narrow leaves covered in clearly visible long white hairs that can be seen with the naked eye. It forms a hemispherical umbel holding 15-20 flowers, each borne on a long pedicel. The flowers are white, with yellow anthers.
Allium subvillosum var. clusianum, a variety formerly included within this species, is now classified as the separate species Allium subhirsutum.
