About Allium platyspathum Schrenk ex Fisch. & C.A.Mey.
Allium platyspathum is an Asian wild onion species. It has been recorded in Xinjiang, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Altay Krai, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan. This species grows in damp places at elevations between 1900 and 3700 meters above sea level. Allium platyspathum typically produces a single egg-shaped bulb that can reach up to 20 mm in diameter. Its scape grows up to 100 cm tall. The leaves are flat and linear, up to 20 mm across, and are roughly the same length as the scape. The inflorescence is a densely packed umbel of pink or lilac flowers. Two subspecies are recognized: Allium platyspathum subsp. amblyophyllum (Kar. & Kir.) N.Friesen has a scape 40–100 cm long, pink flowers, and leaves 10–20 mm wide; it occurs in Xinjiang, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Altay Krai. Allium platyspathum subsp. platyspathum has a scape up to 25 cm long, lilac flowers, and leaves less than 8 mm wide; it is found in Xinjiang, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Altay Krai, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan. One previously included taxon, Allium platyspathum var. falcatum Regel, is now reclassified as Allium carolinianum Redouté.
