About Allium narcissiflorum Vill.
Allium narcissiflorum Vill. is a European wild onion species native to northwestern Italy (Piemonte and Liguria) and southwest France (Provence and Dauphiné). It is cultivated as an ornamental plant in other regions for its attractive flowers. This species is a small, delicate plant that closely resembles Allium insubricum, but grows at higher elevations in the mountains. When in flower, both species have nodding umbels that hang downward. When seeds are mature, A. insubricum retains its nodding umbel, while the umbel of A. narcissiflorum becomes erect. A. narcissiflorum forms clumps made up of many individual plants, spreading through underground rhizomes. Its scapes can grow up to 15 centimeters tall, and each scape produces 4 to 10 bell-shaped magenta flowers.
