About Allium caesium Schrenk
Allium caesium, commonly called light blue garlic, is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant. It is native to central Asia, including Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It grows in deserts and dry fields at elevations between 700 and 2,000 m (2,300–6,600 ft). Most mature plants are 30–40 cm (12–16 in) tall, and grow best in full sun to partial shade. This species produces round bulbs up to 15 mm across. Its scapes can reach up to 65 cm (26 in) tall. Its leaves are round in cross-section, and slightly shorter than the scapes. The flowers are sky-blue, and typically bloom in summer—June to August in England. These flowers attract pollinators including bees and butterflies. Its Latin specific epithet caesium translates to "grey-blue". When cultivated in the United Kingdom, this plant has earned the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. In the United States, it is suitable for hardiness zones 4 through 7.
