About Alcantarea imperialis (Carrière) Harms

This is a large terrestrial bromeliad that was formerly classified as Vriesea imperialis, but is now recognized as a member of the genus Alcantarea. It grows naturally on rocky slopes in the Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro. It is tolerant of dry conditions and full sunlight. It is counted among the largest species in the genus Alcantarea, with leathery leaves that measure 6 inches wide and 5 feet long. It takes up to 40 years for the plant to produce an imposing red inflorescence, which can reach a height of up to 3 meters (9.8 feet). The central tank of the plant can hold up to 30 liters (6.6 imperial gallons; 7.9 US gallons) of rainwater.
