About Aidia racemosa (Cav.) Tirveng.
Aidia racemosa (Cav.) Tirveng. is a tree species that belongs to the Rubiaceae family. It is native to an area that extends from Thailand eastward to the Pacific islands, and southward to Australia. The specific regions where Aidia racemosa is native include Borneo, Caroline Islands, Christmas Island, Gilbert Islands, Hainan, Jawa, Lesser Sunda Islands, Malaya, Maluku, Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Guinea, Nicobar Islands, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sulawesi, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Wallis-Futuna Islands, and the Australian regions of Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia. Specimens from the Pacific Islands have commonly been referred to as Aidia cochinchinensis. In 1988, Tirvengadum observed that Pacific island specimens were distinct from Aidia cochinchinensis from Vietnam, and proposed Aidia racemosa as a separate species for Pacific populations. In 1993, Fobserg noted extensive phenotypic diversity across the Pacific islands, and retained Aidia cochinchinensis as an umbrella name to cover both Pacific and south Asian types. Plants of the World Online (POWO) currently recognizes both Aidia cochinchinensis (native to south-central China and Vietnam) and Aidia racemosa as distinct species.
