About Aidia cochinchinensis Lour.

Aidia cochinchinensis Lour., the type species of the genus Aidia in the family Rubiaceae, is native to south-central China (including Hainan) and Vietnam. No subspecies of this species are listed in the Catalogue of Life. While Aidia cochinchinensis has frequently been reported to occur in the Pacific Islands, botanist Tirvengadum observed that Pacific island specimens were distinct from Vietnamese Aidia cochinchinensis. In 1983, he proposed recognizing the Pacific population as a separate unique species, Aidia racemosa. Plants of the World Online (POWO) follows Tirvengadum's classification, identifying all Aidia plants from the Pacific region, including Australia and the Pacific Islands, as A. racemosa.
