About Agrotis venerabilis Walker

Agrotis venerabilis, commonly known as the dusky cutworm, is a moth species in the family Noctuidae. This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1857. It is distributed across North America from coast to coast, ranging from central Canada southward into Mexico. The wingspan of adult dusky cutworms is approximately 37 mm. In the temperate regions within this species’ range, adults are active in flight from August to September. In the Neotropical portions of its range, adults have a much longer flight season that can begin as early as March. The larvae of this species feed on Medicago sativa, Trifolium, Nicotiana tabacum, Viola, Stellaria media, Avena sativa, and Zea mays.
