About Agrochola lunosa Haworth, 1809
Agrochola lunosa Haworth, 1809 has a wingspan of 32–38 mm. Its forewing varies in colour from pale greyish ochreous to rufous and dark purple brown, and the veins are generally pale. The upper stigmata are distinct, filled with dark colour, and have clear pale outlines. The inner and outer lines are double with paler centres; the inner line curves obliquely outwards, while the outer line is simply sinuous. The submarginal line is pale, preceded by a row of dark spots, and marked with a black blotch or bar on the costa. The hindwing is whitish, suffused with grey (especially in females), and has a large grey cell spot and an interrupted submarginal band. The type form is dull red and lacks pale veins; red forms with pale veins are named ab. rufa Tutt. The palest form, obsoleta Tutt, has no pale nervures. A somewhat darker, more brownish form with pale veins is humilis H. & Wwd. brunnea Tutt has a deep red-brown ground colour with pale veins. In subjecta Dup., the ground colour is dark grey brown, and the most extreme dark form of this, agrotoides Guen., is blackish grey. olivacea Vasq., collected from Spain, has a pale olive ochreous forewing, and rubra Vasq., also from Spain, has a pale reddish ochreous forewing. The larva is light brownish with dark warts, each of which bears a short brush.
