About Agrionoptera insignis (Rambur, 1842)
Agrionoptera insignis (Rambur, 1842) is a dragonfly species belonging to the family Libellulidae. It is native to large parts of eastern Asia and Oceania, with a range extending as far north as Japan and as far south as Australia. It is common across most of its native range. The current circumscription of this species is not fully clear, so its taxonomic status may change if the species is redescribed in the future. One common name for this species is grenadier. Mature males of the species generally have a total body length of 37 to 41 millimeters, and a hindwing length of approximately 28 to 30 millimeters. The male thorax is metallic green with yellow mottling, while the eyes are brown and yellow. The male abdomen is mostly red, with a black tip. The abdomen of female individuals has a duller overall coloration than that of males. This species inhabits swampy areas, including habitats that have been disturbed by human activity.
