About Agriocnemis pieris Laidlaw, 1919
Agriocnemis pieris is a slender, small damselfly that is very conspicuous due to its bluish white base color and dorsal black spots. It has pale blue eyes topped with a black cap, a thorax that is black on the dorsum and pale blue on the sides. Its abdomen is pale blue, with the color deepening on the last four segments, and carries black dorsal markings up to segment 8. Unlike this species, Agriocnemis lacteola lacks these dorsal black marks on segments 4 to 10 of the abdomen. Females are similar in appearance to males, but are more robust, and their blue coloration is darker. Their abdominal black markings extend up to segment 9, and there is a narrow longitudinal blue lateral stripe on segment 8. Females of this species display sexual mimicry: one group of females, called androchromes, mimics the male's coloration, while the other group, gynochromes, has the species' typical female coloration. This damselfly breeds in marshes and wet grasslands.
