About Agriades pyrenaica (Boisduval, 1840)

Agriades pyrenaica (Boisduval, 1840), commonly known as the Gavarnie blue, is a species of Palearctic butterfly that belongs to the Lycaenidae family. This butterfly can be found in the Asturias Mountains of north-western Spain, the Pyrenees, the southern Balkan Peninsula, Turkey, the Caucasus, and Armenia. It inhabits alpine grassy, rocky meadows, occurring at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,200 meters. Agriades pyrenaica has a wingspan of 22 to 28 millimeters. Its wings are grey with a blue suffusion, and are edged with a white border. Each wing has a grey discal spot at its center on the upperside. On the underside, the forewings are marked with black dots that are each ringed with white, while the hindwings have a sub-marginal line of white dots, some of which have yellow centers. The larvae of this butterfly feed on species in the genus Androsace.
