About Agave utahensis Engelm.

Agave utahensis Engelm. is a rosette-forming agave species with sharp-spined blue-green leaves. It produces a very tall raceme inflorescence, which can reach a maximum height of 4 meters (12 feet). The inflorescence is typically yellow or yellow-green, and bears bulbous yellow flowers. Its fruits are capsules 1 to 3 centimeters long that contain black seeds. This species can grow in clonal colonies; a 2024 survey carried out in Nevada estimated that some of these colonies are over 150 years old. Agave utahensis is cultivated as an ornamental plant. In the United Kingdom, it has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Historically, local Native American peoples including the Havasupai used this plant for food and fiber, and the Navajo use it to make blankets.
