About Aethriamanta nymphaeae Lieftinck, 1949
Identification: The L-spot basker (Aethriamanta nymphaeae) and the Square-spot basker (Aethriamanta circumsignata) are very similar dragonflies that can be difficult to tell apart. The common names of both species refer to the dark markings found at the base of each species' hindwing. The L-spot basker usually has one dark brown fleck that radiates between the fourth and fifth veins (Cu and A), plus a small dark patch at a right angle that occupies a few cells running parallel to the abdomen. Together, these two markings form an L shape. A lighter brown area surrounds these dark marks, and this lighter area may extend to the arculus and the hindwing margin. Light brown markings can also occur at the base of the forewing. In some individual L-spot baskers, the characteristic dark markings may be completely absent.
