It was first described by Jacob Hübner between 1814 and 1817, and is cited as first described in 1817. This species is found across Europe and North America. The wingspan of adult Aethes rutilana ranges from 10 to 13 millimetres (0.39–0.51 inches). The larvae of this moth feed on Juniperus communis.
