About Aethes hartmanniana (Clerck, 1759)

Aethes hartmanniana, commonly called the scabious conch, is a species of moth belonging to the family Tortricidae. It was first described by Carl Alexander Clerck in 1759. This moth can be found across most of Europe, as well as in Asia Minor, Armenia, and the southern Urals. It lives specifically in chalky and limestone habitats. The wingspan of adult Aethes hartmanniana measures 15 to 23 millimetres, which is 0.59 to 0.91 inches. Adult moths are active and on wing from June through August each year. The larvae of this species feed on plants in the genera Scabiosa, Succisa, and Knautia, specifically consuming Scabiosa ochroleuca. Larvae feed inside the roots of their host plants. The species overwinters in the larval stage, and pupates inside the larval habitat within the roots during spring.
