About Aechmea distichantha Lem.

Aechmea distichantha Lem., commonly called the Brazilian vaseplant or simply vase plant, is a species of bromeliad. It is typical of Cerrado vegetation in Brazil, and is also native to northern Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is frequently cultivated as an ornamental plant. Four varieties of Aechmea distichantha are currently recognized: Aechmea distichantha var. distichantha, found in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay; Aechmea distichantha var. glaziovii (Baker) L.B.Sm., published in 1943, found in southeastern Brazil; Aechmea distichantha var. schlumbergeri E.Morren ex Mez, published in 1892, found in Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay; and Aechmea distichantha var. vernicosa E.Pereira, published in 1979, found in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.
