About Acronicta funeralis Grote & Robinson, 1866
Acronicta funeralis, commonly known as the funerary dagger moth or paddle caterpillar, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. This species was first described by Augustus Radcliffe Grote and Coleman Townsend Robinson in 1866. It has a scattered distribution across North America. Its range extends from Manitoba to Nova Scotia in the north, south to Maryland; it can also be found in Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and along the west coast from California to British Columbia. The wingspan of adult Acronicta funeralis measures 32 to 40 mm. Adult moths are active in flight from May to August, with timing varying based on location. This species produces two or more generations per year in southern parts of its range, and one or two generations per year in the north. The caterpillar larvae of this species feed on the leaves of alder, apple, birch, blueberry, huckleberry, cottonwood, dogwood, elm, hazel, hickory, maple, oak, and willow.
