About Acronicta aceris (Linnaeus, 1758)
Scientific name: Acronicta aceris (Linnaeus, 1758). Technical description and variation: The forewing is whitish grey, with a thin, interrupted basal streak, and a black streak running through the outer line on the submedian fold. The hindwing is white in males, and greyish with blackish veins in females. The aberrations differ in wing coloration as follows. The aberration ab. infuscata Haw. (2f) has the entire forewing suffused with dark grey. The aberration ab. candelisequa Esp., which Staudinger incorrectly synonymized with infuscata, appears from its illustration to be intermediate between infuscata and the typical form, if it actually belongs to this species at all. The aberration ab. intermedia Tutt (= candelisequa Gn. nec Esp.) is the common British form; its forewing is darker, tinged with ochreous, and has more distinct markings. The aberration ab. judaea Stgr., collected from Palestine, is paler, with a greyish white forewing. The larva has diffuse tufts of long yellow or fulvous hairs. It has a dorsal series of snow white, purple-edged, diamond-shaped spots, which are sometimes connected by a white line, and it has a black head.
