About Acrocomia intumescens Drude

This species of palm has the scientific name Acrocomia intumescens Drude. It grows a single solitary stem that reaches up to ten meters in height, and is characteristically swollen in the middle section—this feature is referenced by its Latin specific epithet intumescens. Its leaves are compound, plicated, and deciduous, and its inflorescence has a panicle-like shape. In Northeast Brazil, this plant is widely used for urban afforestation of public squares and roads. Its wood is also widely used for civil construction, and the mesocarp of its fruits is edible. When cultivated, one panicle of this plant produces an average of 25 fruits. Seedling germination of this species is slow, taking between one and three years to complete.
