About Acraea ranavalona Boisduval, 1833
Scientific name: Acraea ranavalona Boisduval, 1833
Description of A. ranavalona Bdv. (53 c, d). In males, the forewing is bright red from its base all the way out to vein 2; in females, the forewing is almost completely hyaline. The hindwing has a grey, often semitransparent marginal band marked with red spots. The red marginal spots are proximally bordered by sharply defined black submarginal dots. The basal and discal dots are distinct. The ground-colour is white on the underside. On the upperside, the ground-colour is bright red in males, and white or whitish in females. This species is found in Madagascar and the Comoros.
Female aberrant form manandaza Ward (53 d) has a more or less reddish ground-colour on the hindwing, and occurs in Madagascar. Aberrant form maransetra Ward has the discal dots of the hindwing united into a transverse band, and occurs in Madagascar.
