This species is found in North America, with confirmed records from the eastern United States and south-central Canada, including the regions of Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Its typical habitats include fields, waste areas, and riparian zones. This moth has a wingspan measuring 16 to 20 mm, and adult individuals are active on the wing from May to September each year. The larvae of Ponometia erastrioides feed on plants of the genus Ambrosia. Fully grown larvae reach a maximum length of 25 mm.
