The scientific name of this species is Acleris variegana (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775. In terms of morphology, its fore wings are parallel-sided with an oblique outer margin. The basal half of each fore wing is white or yellowish-white, and a grayish-brown triangular spot sits close to the wing root. The distal portion of the fore wing is reddish-brown or violet-brown, edged with a narrow grayish-yellow strip. The hind wings are brownish-gray, and the total wingspan ranges from 14 to 20 millimetres, or 0.55 to 0.79 inches. A full description of the species is provided by Julius von Kennel. This is a common species found throughout Europe, and also occurs in Northern and Central Asia, China, Japan, and North America.
