About Acer granatense Boiss.
Acer granatense Boiss., commonly called the Spanish maple, is a flowering plant species in the maple genus Acer. It is native to southern and eastern Spain, including the Balearic Island of Mallorca, as well as the Rif Mountains of Morocco. Some botanical authorities treat it as a subspecies of the Italian maple, classified as Acer opalus subsp. granatense. This species most often grows on cliffs and in crevices within mountainous regions. It occurs at elevations ranging from 190 meters to 2,000 meters, and frequently grows on north-facing slopes that provide shelter from summer droughts characteristic of the Mediterranean climate. It is commonly found growing in association with Abies pinsapo, Quercus species, Berberis vulgaris subsp. australis, Crataegus laciniata, and Juniperus oxycedrus.
